Nearwater St Mawes Triathlon 2011

Thu, 29/09/2011 - 20:33

The second running of the Nearwater St Mawes Triathlon took place on Sunday 25th September.  The weather was kind and the sea calm for the 900m swim around St Mawes Castle, the swimmers were joined by a seal which watched from a short distance away.  The cycle ride of 24 km took the competitors out through St Just and Philliegh and naturally included one or two tough hills. The 3 mile run was around the village and the finish below the castle. 176 atheletes from all over the country took part and the mens' race was won by a Neil Eddy of Cycle Logic in 1hr 17 min and the womens' race was won by Esther Oldrieve of Falmouth Gig Club in 1 hr 35 min. The first Roseland resident home was Christophe Dormenval (1hr 34 min), a dinghy instructor and engineering student from Portscatho. Spectators turned out in force and competitors were cheered through the village and all the way up to the finish below the castle. Despite sleepless nights all week worrying about the weather the conditions were almost perfect and it was a great event incredibly well supported by local people , businesses and organisations. Many competitors commented that not only did they love the natural beauty of the area but what really made it for them was the friendly atmosphere that pervaded the whole event.
